REVIEWS

DIDN'T WE DO WELL

Sunday 26th September 2004 - The Wheatsheaf,

This really was a lot of fun. We arrived just in time to see Old Blue Moses finishing their first set, kicking out some old favourites like Joe Cocker's "The Letter". A quick turn around saw Supernova take the stage - OK the little bit of space tucked away at the back of the pub - and launch into their original set and powerful use of overdrive and feedback. Acoustic duo AKA followed on and after a 20 minute soundcheck (for one guitar and two microphones!?!?!) started on their original "fruitful fusion of soft rock and modern blues".

A quick turn around and set up for Headlong saw us start some 45 minutes behind schedule. No worries though. The idea was for every one to have a relaxing afternoon. Sorry, but Headlong were about to kick things up several gears and wake anyone one from their peaceful slumbers. As the" this-band-seem-to-know-what-they're-doing" introductions finished with a low chord resonating from Jim's keyboard in the background, the opening chords of "Jump" cut through the polite welcoming applause. People were taking notice. From the powerful end of this into the the rocking opening chords of "Since you've been gone". This was what the audience wanted. Something they recognised, something they could drink beer to and enjoy.

A quick spoken link into the soft intro of "Standing in the Rain" that we use now to start "Evil Woman" accompanied by an audience clapping along. This was going very well. The soulful "Still got the blues" tempered the mood temporarily, with things getting back up again with Jim belting out Queen's "One Vision". Time was now running short and we were limited to just one more number, so we finished with "Reeling in the Years" just to keep things bouncing along.

An excellent set well performed. From the audience's reaction we took the afternoon as a success and were congratulated on a job well done by the pub landlord, audience and other band members.

An excellent jam session followed, churning out some blues classics. Great stuff to drink beer to on a Sunday afternoon. Three Chords Light followed with their set of original rock and then came the excellent Ruff Justice with their superb set of rock and blues covers. (Must be something about NW Kent and the Medway Towns that produces bands like this)

Andy Cortes turned up without a band so a hastily rigged group of musicians backed this very talented young man in his set of R'n'B and blues numbers.

By now, the excellent real ale was taking effect - probably a little too much effect - so it was time to leave meaning that we missed "Beats Working" and Old Blues Moses's last set.

This is a great venue and Howard and Sarah are superb hosts and really are helping to keep the live music scene alive and very-much-kicking. We managed to make a couple of useful contacts and convince a few people that they should come along to see us on the 8th October. An excellent afternoon - thanks to Martin at OBM for organising it.

OH WE DID LIKE TO BE BESIDE THE SEASIDE

1st September 2004 - The Britannia, Fort Hill, Margate, Kent.

A virgin venue for us and very much a try-out evening, for the pub, the band, and a new PA system. It took some time to settle down but eventually we managed to get some vocals without feedback (I blame H).

A few new numbers in the set, including a re-working of ELO's "Standing in the Rain" as a two minute introduction to "Evil Woman", and Maroon 5's tribute to asthmatics everywhere, "Harder to Breathe". The sparse audience seemed to appreciate the effort we put into the evening as did the pub guvnors who have promised to include us on their list when they phone round for next year's gigs.

We look forward to hearing from you.

CHATHAM UP

21st July 2004

Short notice gigs can be interesting affairs. We found out about the gig at the RAFA Club in Chatham approximately 18 hours before we were due to go on. "OK", thinks us, "We can do this".

And so, after some quick phone calls and a few e-mails we managed to drum up absolutely no support whatsoever.
Good job really. We received a little shock when we got there and were told, "No mate, it's bands, not band". It seems we were the first of three bands on that evening. Still, at least they had their own PA and sound engineer so the sound should be perfect...

Well, no offence mate, but if that bloke was a sound engineer, I'm next in line to fly a mission to Jupiter. For all the good he did he may as well have been trying to insert the Rock of Gibraltar up a cow's arse - judging by some of the sounds he was getting he may well have been doing just that. Starting with terrible low frequency feedback on the kick drum microphone he then persisted until he managed a high frequency whistle on the vocal microphones as well. He then switched the foldback monitors on, but to no effect other than a lovely 50Hz mains hum. So the only way we could hear the vocal was to rely on the sound bouncing off the wall at the far end of the hall and judge it from there.

It all went OK and people said the front of house sound was OK. Hmmm... maybe they were being kind. The other bands that were on (one a group of oldish blokes with rapidly fading tattoos, the other a fairly talented and good looking group of 17 year olds who are obviously trying to make it - and may stand a good chance) said that they really appreciated what we played and how we played it.

The band after us were commenting to the organiser that it would be difficult for them to follow us. Praise is praise no matter where it comes from or how heartfelt it was, so thanks lads.

As for payment we were told that the first £60 through the door pays for the hall. Then the bands share out 50% of the takings on the door. And so, having bought a couple of rounds of drinks at a reasonable £2 a pint the organiser presented Headlong with one crisp shiny £10 note to share out. The organiser tried to convince us that we should spend it on the reasonably priced beer in his club. We decided on the pub over the road - the gig organiser telling us "It's £2.75 over there", with me shouting back, "It's OK, you've paid us nearly enough for four pints" - where we ended up chatting to a couple of guys from another local band, The Modways. Check them out if you get a chance.

BEAR WITH US

Monday 31st May 2004

Not liking to miss a window of opportunity, Headlong stood in for the resident "Gambler" at The Bear in Crayford. A tough act to follow we all agreed, and possibly even tough to break the crowd, especially since many of them were at the pub expecting Gambler to be there, the pub staff included.

Thankfully we were among friends and the sympathetic applause turned to genuine appreciation once we had got going and nerves had been dispelled. Two short sets later which included a technical balls up in the guitar string department, and an even bigger balls up in the pub's electrical distribution, resulting in an abrupt end to "Sultans of Swing", we were hearing generally favourable comments. Even those who were fed-up that Gambler had not shown were making some good comments including "Well it's a good job their replacements were pretty good".

All in all we felt it was a success and would have to be pretty hopeful of a return to the pub billed as Kent's number 1 music venue.

FIRST FOOTINGS

Our first gigs went as well as can be expected, and everyone seemed to appreciate and enjoy the music. Hopefully this was down to more than just the effect of having an almost totally partisan crowds of friends and associates at both venues.
.
The mixture of music within the sets catered for just about everyone in the Tiger's Head, even the presenters from Swale Sound FM who came along in their OB unit. (No chance of you recording it then lads?). Enough for the connoisseur, for the pop fan, and for those who wanted to sing (or should that be yell?) along. The only battle we really had was with the noise limiter which cut all power to the stage mid way through two or three songs - "DRUM SOLO!". So was it the bass, was it the drums, or was it the vocals? Can't have been H's guitar. That's never loud...

The third gig at the Tiger's Head was as expected. A much smaller turn out and the same battle against the local council's noise limiting equipment which cut us out a couple of times in the middle of songs - cue panicked shouts of "DRUM SOLO!" until the bar staff could find the switch to return power to the stage. At least we had a good opportunity to throw in a half dozen or so new numbers to the set and to give them a good rehearsal.
